The laundry challenge continues...and it has been hampered (ha! pun intended) by my oh so productive, but not yet all that green in practice husband of mine. When I asked him to put my portable clothesline back outside, before I ran off to work (he is a freelance photographer and stay at home daddy), he said, "Hey, I didn't sign up for the challenge." Nice. Real support.
So. There has been some laundry done and dried in the dryer while I have been off teaching school. But NO laundry I have done has been in the dryer-- and all of it has been cold water washed with non-toxic detergent. To his credit, he also washes in cold with the same earth friendly Seventh Gen detergent.
The girls and I hung a HUGE load of their clothes together in the blazing sun. We had fun doing it, and I like that they help. It is developing their sense of perseverance (a word I use with them often), connection to renewable energy and the earth. I'll admit, it is harder to keep up with line drying, but now that it is summer, it is mostly manageable. By putting the portable clothesline in our basement, I can dry without worries about afternoon thunderstorms.
And with our ancient dryer, I am saving loads of energy (notice I didn't say we). What is wrong with regular laundry detergent, you ask?
Loads (oh, the puns just keep coming)! Just check out this information from Seventh Generation:
Masking Agents: What Are They Hiding?
· Truly fragrance free products have a scent. If there is no scent, it is likely that the product contains a masking agent.
· Masking agents are actually synthetic fragrances that neutralize the scents so that there is no appreciable odor in a product.
· Masking agents have similar effects to fragrances – some people have skin and respiratory sensitivity to them.
· If a product does not contain fragrance it may still contain a masking agent – “no masking agents” claims indicate to consumers with sensitivities to fragrance that there are no fragrances present.
Optical Brighteners: Not a Brilliant Idea
· Optical brighteners are chemicals that make fabrics seem brighter or whiter than they are.
· They remain behind on clean laundry as a coating and when invisible ultraviolet light hits this coating; they convert it into visible light to create an optical illusion that tricks the eye into thinking our clothes are super clean.
· Optical brighteners are designed to remain behind on clothes/laundry which means they come in direct contact with skin.
· They can cause allergic reactions in some people.
· Some are poisonous to fish and other aquatic life.
· Many are not biodegradable and remain in waterways.
Why Seventh Generation Laundry Products are Different
· Plant-based laundry detergents are are non-toxic and biodegradable
· Hypo-allergenic
· Free of phosphates and optical brighteners
· Safe for septic and greywater systems
· Not tested on animals and are Kosher certified

This sounds great! I love hanging my daughter's clothdiapers in the sun (or in her room on a rack). I could use another rack... hope I win! :)
YES I would like to win that!
We can't hang our clothes outside, but they hang all around our basement. I believe it makes them last longer, as well.
Great job! I find it a hard thing to stick to...laundry hanging, but once you get the hang of it it becomes a habit. Hopefully your hubby will soon be converted too!
Love seventh generation! I also use their dishwasher detergent. It is a trust thing. Lots of products now are starting to "look" natural, safe and good for us and the environment that are actually very far from that. Seventh generation is the real thing.
I totally forgot to say that: My goondess your girls are ADORABLE!!!
Wow, great price, would love to win it. Since our daughter was born I try to switch more and more to non-toxic products. Thanks "Seventh Generation" for safe products!
I love Seventh Generation! I've tried a lot of their items, but have yet to try the laundry detergent. :)
I LOVE Seventh Generation products! That is mostly what you find throughout my house. I line dry some clothes on a folding rack, but really want to get a clothesline outside for larger items.
Thank you for talking about eco-friendly products that do an even better job than their toxic counterparts.
Is this open to Canadians?? If not then I guess just disregard my post from the entrants. I have used 7th generation a lot for my laundry soap and have found it really effective I just wish that they came in bigger sized bottles.

I've been using Seventh Generation for about 4 years now... love them!
We have a set of copper pipes on the wall by the woodstove so that we can hang laundry in the winter time too. Clothes dry there in a matter of an hour or two when the stove is stoking. Then it's outdoors in the non-heating season. Thanks for the option to win 7Gen stuff. :)
I would love to win. I use alot of their products, but the laundry detergent is one that I haven't tried.
Ooo...great post! I did not know about the masking agents in normal detergents (but stay away from those anways). It's so frustrating to think that you might buy something (like fragrance free detergent) because it is supposed to be better for you, when in fact it is not.
I have used other 7th Gen products but not thier laundry detergents. I would love to give them a try :)
Thanks for the giveaway!

Excellent work, Katy! Oh those husbands :) I would love to win the prize. I love Seventh Gen products AND my husband loves to give our son rides in baskets, so it would be a win for the whole family!

I love seventh generation, and I could use a clothesline and non-toxic laundry basket! I used to line-dry... before I had kids.
I did win one of your recent giveaways though (the "little green" books - which my kids love).

we use a ton of 7th gen stuff--diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, dish soap, etc. love their products!
we also wash everything in cold and while we do use the dryer, we don't use dryer sheets anymore.
i live in the city so line drying is a bit of a challenge yr round, but probably doable in the summer
Great post! I wash eveything in cold (with Seventh Generation laundry detergent), but I still use the dryer a lot unfortunately. I need to work on that!

Great post! I try to dry my laundry in the sun as often as possible, but with a newborn (and tons of laundry that comes with that newborn), this has proven less likely to happen. But you inspire me!
Dryer just died and told my family we'll be hanging our clothes out- at least thru summer-hopefully I can adjust to a full time method of natural drying! ... awdominguez@regent.edu
Our machines are breaking down. My skin is very sensitive to many products. I would love to try this. belinda468 @ hotmail . com
I would LOVE to win this! I am going to start cloth-diapering and I already love their laundry detergent!
