Earth Day Series: The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge (review and giveaway!)

In preparation for Earth Day, Non-Toxic Kids is embarking on an Earth Day series of posts for the rest of April.  There will be some giveaways (go, readers!) and some guest posts, and some information about celebrating and preserving our one and only planet Earth.

To start off, I received the brand new
The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen.  My kids are gaga for Ms. Frizzle.  I've got lots of Magic School Bus books on various topic floating around my house and classroom.  They are great for introducing concepts to my fifth and sixth grade students, and my now 3 and 5 year olds love them too.

Now Ms. Frizzle and the kids have taken on climate change.  Of course, there is loads of fun, silly kid comments, and serious scientific information (that is what I love).  It comes in the forms of reports, lessons from Ms. Frizzle, and colorful and lively diagrams.

Ms. Frizzle leads her students on a journey in the flying bus to see the effects of climate change in real and understandable terms.  From the Arctic to the equator, they see telltale signs of climate change. But to get the really big picture, the class has to get really small – so they can see exactly what is in the air and why it is making the world warmer. What they find gives them a real cause for concern!  This is for any parent who wants to explain what climate change is, in a positive, empowering way.  It is hard for children to hear about what is happening, but the book ends with the many ways kids can help.

And now for the fun part.  Win it!

One Grand Prize winner receives:

  • Kids Organic “Go Green” Scholastic T-shirt
  • Copy of The Magic School Bus and The Climate Challenge

Two additional winners will receive a copy of the book!

Comment on this post to enter, and leave your email address in a spam unfriendly manner.  Extra entries for following us on Twitter (@non_toxic_kids), on Facebook, or post about this on your site.  Just let me know in your comment.  Thanks and good luck! The contest runs from April 5 through April 19th.

Want to learn more?  Climb on board with author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen on Tuesday, April 20th at 1pm ET / 10am PT for a webcast as they join Ms. Frizzle to celebrate Earth Day and their new book The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey CityNew Jersey!

*FTC obligations:  Yes, I did receive a review copy of this book, but was not compensated in anyway to write this post. It is, as all of my posts are, based on my independent experiences, humble judgement and opinions. *

My 7 year old is a huge Magic School Bus fan! (No surprise as mom & dad both have science degrees). We are big library, used-book store and garage sale fans and always are on the hunt for Ms. Frizzle.

I love Ms. Frizzle books myself, teach with them, and enjoy them at home. Had not heard of th is book yet, we are taking a field trip to the local recycling center and the wastewater treatment plant as part of our earth day learning adventure! It would be great to get a book, too!

Sound like a great book. I wasn't sure if this would be age appropriate for my 3 and 5 year old, but I am going to pick it up now.

I am so excited about this book! I've made it a habit to track down and pick up every book that I can find that will help my little one to develop an appreciation for, and a desire to do her part to preserve, our natural resources. I also adore the Magic School Bus series and am so glad they have come out with this edition!

Great idea. Have been looking for a way to introduce this to my 3 year old without scaring her and in simple terms. Looks wonderful.
