New Post on MightyNest: Super Scary Halloween Face Paint (lead, PVC, and phthalates!)

Very scary, indeed. Here is a new post about the toxins in mainstream face paints you might be reaching for this Halloween. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has a shocking new report about face paints, including safe do it yourself recipes.

The levels of lead that this report talks about are so low that contamination from the environment is as likely as actual lead in the paint, especially if they were not extremely disciplined with their testing techniques. You can find higher levels of lead in carrots from your own garden.

You are right, lead is a naturally occurring element. But does that mean you should be purposely applying it to your child's face?

There is lead in our environment, and the cumulative affects at low levels are causing more and more concern from doctors (see my recent post about a new study of low level lead exposures). I sat through the testimony of three experienced doctors at the Vermont legislature, who testified to the fact that "acceptable" levels of lead exposure are way too high, and they are just beginning to understand the serious ramifications of low level lead exposure.

So in that case, does it really make sense to add to the already existing exposures (from soil, vegetables, water) with something that is not necessary? I certainly don't think so.
