Oh, the Washington Post was packed with comments on a recent post about a potential Swine Flue vaccine. I was quoted in the post, as being a little apprehensive, but not anti-vaccine.
And the readers just let it rip. The comments were typical: lots of pro-vaccination and very anti-vaccination folks, all with particular zeal. It seemed to go back to the autism/vaccine debate, which I do feel has been in large measure resolved. The wounds however, are most certainly not healed.
I did learn a few things. That New Jersey mandates flu vaccine, for one. I wonder if they guarantee it is thimerosal free? And what about the children allergic to eggs (since they are cultured in eggs)? That is one reason why my daughter did not receive the vaccine for several years.
I still want to talk with my doctor about a swine flu vaccine, and do more reading before I decide. And to one commenter, "goozby", (I think): I am not feeling rushed because of the feds developing this vaccine quickly, I think that is great. I feel rushed because I need to slow down, read, and talk to my doctor, three things that in my life right now are very difficult to do (all before September), while parenting two young children. It's intimidating because I have no idea what is in this vaccine. Not a clue. And I like to know what is being injected into my child.
I am all for doing something for a greater community good here, I just need to know how necessary the medical community thinks this vaccination really is. I asked my doctor today, and she hadn't heard about any swine flu vaccine for this fall. So we will just have to see.
