Safer States has stepped up to the plate to help guide our outrage about BPA in canned goods. They are a group who is (according to their website):
" a network of diverse environmental health coalitions and organizations in states around the country that share a bold and urgent vision.
We believe families, communities, and the environment should be protected from the devastating impacts of our society’s heavy use of chemicals. We believe that new state and national chemical policies will contribute to the formation of a cleaner, greener economy.
The current system of regulating and managing chemicals is outdated and legally allows the proliferation of toxic chemicals including lead, PBDEs, phthalates, bisphenol A, and others linked to serious health and environmental problems in the products that we use each and every day."
I couldn't agree more. And they are taking the latest BPA lobbyist meeting very seriously. In fact, they are harnessing the mom energy and outrage about this issue and are helping us mobilize. Follow them on Twitter at @safercans, or become a fan of Safer Cans on Facebook to stay informed.
What did they discover recently, with help from Chistopher Gavin of Healthy Child Healthy World? That Eden foods, who I have written about here as the only canned good producer that doesn't use BPA on its products except its canned tomatoes, pays only 2 cents each can to use a BPA alternative.
2 cents. Yep, 2 cents to spare us from all the health consequences of BPA, such as links to heart disease, obesity, multiple forms of cancer, reproductive system development problems, interference with chemotherapy, to name a few.
So stay informed, visit Safer States and link up with Safer Cans. Let's work together to let them know our health is worth much more than 2 cents a can.
