Metal Water Bottles Recalled for Lead Paint-

You try and try to do the right thing as a parent. I've often commented that it feels like being a tiny fish swimming upstream, trying to navigate what to buy and use with your kids, while protecting them from rampant advertising, toxic chemicals and in many cases, themselves (as they dive headfirst of the couch).

Many parents are buying aluminum or stainless steel water bottles for their kids, because of all the media attention and studies about the chemical BPA (Bisphenol A)in certain plastics. So you go out and buy one from a seemingly harmless company with a quaint name out of Maine, called Downeast Concepts.

They look like the Sigg bottles, but they most definitely are not. These bottles have been recalled for violating the lead paint standards. Here is the recall from the CPSC. See the above picture, and be sure to visit the link above for more detailed information.

My daughters use Sigg bottles, and the company seems to have a strong environmental commitment and a pledge to not use BPA, but another good option, if you don't want to use BPA free plastic, is the Kleen Kanteen line of bottles. They are made with stainless steel, with no paint and no linings.

It seems like there is a new product recall every few days. I am especially concerned about all the recalls on children's toys and household products. I now have a personal file that alerts me to product recalls. I also receive timely notices when one of my products has is an update. You can acesss the recalls and update notices at the product blog page.

Thanks for the tip! You can also sign up for email updates from the CPSC, which is what I do. Or, you can look at the feed on this blog. That helps because then your inbox isn't flooded and you can quickly glance at what is being recalled.

i found a great little company called http://firstjuice.com/green.html. i bought a couple of the apple/carrot juices for my girls (5 and 1 1/2) at Babies R Us. the bottles from what i find are completely reusable and can be cleaned in hot/warm sudsy water with a bottle brush. the non-spill sippy lids can be cleaned as well by sticking a small spoon handle in the valve and moving it aside to let the soapy water and then the rinsing water flow through it. they also come with a protective cap to keep the sippy tip clean! (love that!) actually, love these bottles! go check them out!
